As the holiday season approaches, it’s easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of shopping, decorating, parties, and planning. While these activities bring joy, they often leave little room for the true reason we celebrate: the birth of Jesus Christ.
In the busyness of December, I’m reminded of the simple yet powerful lyrics from the carol “Joy to the World”:
"Let every heart prepare Him room."
This phrase challenges us to pause and intentionally create space for Christ in our hearts and homes during the season. But how do we practically “prepare Him room” when life feels so full?
1. Declutter Your Calendar
Consider your schedule. Are you saying “yes” to too many commitments? Preparing room for Jesus often means saying “no” to things that don’t align with His peace and purpose. Prioritize moments of quiet reflection, family devotions, or serving others in His name.
2. Start the Day with Him
Amidst the rush, begin each morning with a simple prayer or Scripture reading. It doesn’t have to be elaborate—just a few moments to focus your heart on Him. You might meditate on verses like Luke 2:10-11:
"Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; He is the Messiah, the Lord."
3. Make Your Home a Place of Worship
Let your home reflect the message of Christ. Display nativity scenes, play Christmas hymns, or light candles during an Advent devotional. These small acts can shift the focus from materialism to the miracle of Jesus’ birth.
4. Give with a Purpose
Instead of getting caught in the cycle of endless gift-giving, choose to give in ways that honor God. Support a family in need, donate to a ministry, or give gifts that inspire faith.
5. Reflect on the Manger
The Christmas story is about humility: the King of Kings born in a lowly stable. Reflecting on this humility can soften our hearts and remind us of the depth of God’s love. When we quiet our souls, we can hear Him saying, “Be still and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10).
Preparing Him Room Today
Making space for Christ doesn’t require perfection. It simply calls for a willing heart—a heart ready to slow down, surrender distractions, and embrace the hope, peace, and joy that Jesus offers.
This Christmas, let’s not leave Jesus standing outside the inn of our hearts. Let’s open the door, make room, and invite Him into the center of our celebrations. After all, the greatest gift we can give or receive is His presence in our lives.
How are you preparing Him room this Christmas?
Courageously His,
Lisa
